Young and adult robin

On Sunday morning I was leaning on my back verandah, listening to birdsong, when I couldn’t miss the busy-ness of the Eastern Yellow Robins.

The robins were moving back and forth between the area around the birdbaths and the edge of the dense bushland. At the birdbaths they sat patiently on exposed perches, a couple of metres above ground, as they watched for invertebrates and small lizards in the grass. These lovely robins have silver grey heads and golden yellow underparts.

In the photograph above you can see the yellow-olive rump typical of the more southern robins, it’s such a lovely colour to see flashing as they take flight. This robin gave its wings a little shake before taking off. It has a tiny sprig of dried grass on its shoulder that it picked up when it took prey from the recently mown grass.

I didn’t realise that one of the robins was a youngster until I loaded my images in Lightroom. If you look closely at the robin above you’ll see that it still has many of its brown fledgling feathers among the greys and yellows.

I collected the freshly printed calendars today and they look fantastic. I’m aiming to get them all sent out early next week. Many thanks for so much wonderful support.

Happy birding, Kim
