I cannot believe that in all these years I have never dedicated a post to a White-browed Scrubwren.
This bold little species weighs about 12g and measures about 12cm from the tips of their tongues to the tip of their tails. I find the colours in this shot really pleasing. The warm browns of the bird’s feathers are quite beautiful. The chevrons on its wings are great identifiers, along with its white eyebrow and the white line below its eye. The background colours are super pretty too.

At first glance, it could be a sparrow – but take a closer look – it always pays to look closely – you can see just how delicate the white markings are. You’re right about the rich browns, too – like the outer shell of a chestnut- lovely autumnal colours. Here by the bay in Melbourne, we have had such a mild, sunny Winter, that I noticed something very odd for the first time ever last week. Even though we have one month more to go of Winter, the male Superb Fairy wrens already have their dazzling blue plumage. I love to see their intensely turquoise feathers, but find it worrying that the wrens think it is Spring already! Also, our magpies are busy building their nests, way before Spring has sprung. What on earth is going on? The seasons are all out of whack, and global warming is making its sinister presence felt. Have you noticed similar premature activity amongst the bird life in your neck of the woods, Kim?
That’s so true Deirdre! They do look like LBBs at first glance. I’m glad you like those warm colours too. The fairywrens here are already wearing their blues. Some older males are able to retain their blue plumage throughout winter. But I do agree with you re strange things happening due to climate change. The Maned Ducks set up their nest way earlier than usual.
Our family love watching Foyle’s War and that series centres often on the British army and all its majors and generals dressed in their ‘brown’ uniforms and distinguished by different stripes and this gorgeous little White-browned Scrubwren with its distinctive white stripes definitely looks ‘General’ material.
The palette of Mother Nature once again shows she is the ultimate artist and all exquisitely captured by a very talented photographer.
I had to search for Foyle’s War as I’d never heard of it. The boldness of scrubwrens fits that image too! Oh, I wrote this ages ago, hopefully it will post this time…
