Magnificent Mulga Parrots

Mulga Parrots are my favourite parrots, the showy males are resplendent while the females have a subtle beauty of their own. The close-up of the male is like no sight or photograph I’ve ever seen – it showcases his sensational magnificence.

Can you imagine my delight when this male Mulga Parrot landed close enough to photograph him. I love the way he held his feathers – I cropped in more closely in the next image.

I am mesmerised by the portrait above. The more I look, the more I see. I love the way his feathers look like leaves and petals. The colours are remarkable with his yellow shoulder bars off-setting the greens, teals and blues. It also shows his bright yellow-red frontal band above his bill, and the red patch at the top of his head. He takes my breath away.

And here is the sweet female with her own subtle beauty.

I loved my visit to the Mallee, it’s a place that touches my heart every time I am lucky enough to make the trip. My vehicle still isn’t home. The initial problem related to the battery and the alternator, that has been solved. Yesterday I had the shocking news that the coolant has been leaking and that I’m up for thousands more to fix that issue. I can’t help thinking that conservation wildlife photography is a far more expensive passion than if I’d taken up crochet. It might be a good time to buy a lottery ticket…

Happy birding, Kim

    Hi Kim,
I’ve just emailed you regarding your car dilemma – at kim@lirralirra.com
and i hope that email address is working now, and you received it.

Oh Deirdre, my lirralirra address isn’t working atm, I’ve been trying to get it fixed. I have another email address I could send to you…

A truly superb photo, Kim – had the male parrot been caught in the rain? He looks a bit drenched – which makes his divine colours pop!
You have really caught the spark of cleverness in his eyes. I also love the delicate pastel shades of the female – she’s sitting there, with a look in her eye that seems to say – ‘I don’t have to impress anybody!’
That’s a real bugger about your car. I was just wondering, have you thought of setting up a ‘go fund me’ appeal to help finance the huge cost of repairs? I’m sure all your subscribers to Lirralirra would be happy to contribute.

He had just dipped himself in water Deirdre and was doing an after-bath feather-ruffle. I agree with you about the female! And what an absolutely lovely thought in your final paragraph, though I don’t think I could ever ask. I have been wondering about buying a lottery ticket although I know that is totally illogical.

I have no words over and above those you use for this breath taking beauty.
What a magnificent embroidery could be made with this vast array of colours. Still, it wouldn’t top the photograph.

  • What an absolutely glorious bird, and wonderful photos to showcase that glory. Thank you.
I am so sorry about your car. Given that you had it serviced just before your trip, perhaps the garage that did the work has some questions to answer. Good luck.

Thanks EC. I’m a bit disappointed that the battery/alternator problem wasn’t picked up, and that the coolant leak wasn’t mentioned. I don’t think they realised that when I said I was going remote I meant genuinely remote, including non-gazetted tracks. They are fixing things for me now, I’d hoped to hear yesterday, I’m feeling a bit nervous as time goes on. Doing the photography I like would be a bit of an effort on a bicycle!
