I am particularly fond of tiny birds, even the Little Brown Birds that are sometimes tricky to identify.

Brown Thornbills weigh a mere seven grams, and measure about 9-10cm bill to tail. They often chatter to each other while they feed, with a musical warble which helps to identify them from the Striated Thornbill with its tzzz tzzz call. I regularly see both species together though Brown Thornbills tend to forage in the understorey while Striated Thornbills prefer to be higher in the canopy.

I was in the garden late one afternoon as the sun was setting, there was just one ray of sunshine left which was quickly disappearing. For some crazily optimistic reason I decided to wait until there was no light at all which was such a lucky decision as this thornbill thoughtfully landed right in the light.

Every two years the Birdlife Australia Photography Group organises a fabulous conference.
