Mulga Parrots are my favourite parrots, the showy males are resplendent while the females have a subtle beauty of their own. The close-up of the male is like no sight or photograph I’ve ever seen – it showcases his sensational magnificence.

Can you imagine my delight when this male Mulga Parrot landed close enough to photograph him. I love the way he held his feathers – I cropped in more closely in the next image.

I am mesmerised by the portrait above. The more I look, the more I see. I love the way his feathers look like leaves and petals. The colours are remarkable with his yellow shoulder bars off-setting the greens, teals and blues. It also shows his bright yellow-red frontal band above his bill, and the red patch at the top of his head. He takes my breath away.

And here is the sweet female with her own subtle beauty.

I loved my visit to the Mallee, it’s a place that touches my heart every time I am lucky enough to make the trip. My vehicle still isn’t home. The initial problem related to the battery and the alternator, that has been solved. Yesterday I had the shocking news that the coolant has been leaking and that I’m up for thousands more to fix that issue. I can’t help thinking that conservation wildlife photography is a far more expensive passion than if I’d taken up crochet. It might be a good time to buy a lottery ticket…
