Plumed Whistling-duck

It’ll be amazing if I can get this spectacular bird sent before midnight, it’s been a crazy couple of days – and that’s saying something in this crazy couple of years!

Plumed Whistling-Duck (Dendrocygna eytoni)

The Plumed Whistling-Duck is my favourite of the two whistling duck species found in Australia (the other being the Wandering Whistling-duck). The long, creamy plumes along its flank are immediately eye-catching. A closer look reveals many other lovely features including its pink and black mottled bill, orange eye, pink legs, honey-coloured chest, chestnut barred underparts and grey/brown feathers on its back that are edged with buff fringes.

Plumed Whistling-ducks have an upright posture on land and in the water, and sensibly get their name from their plumes and loud whistling call. They graze on native grasses, often during the night. They are found mainly in the tropical areas of northern Australia but can be found further south, particularly in the east.

It was good to get so many responses, here and privately, about your favourite duckling shot from last week, thank you.

Happy birding, stay safe, Kim
