I can see you

When I’m wandering in bushland I often wonder how many creatures are watching me.

Eastern Yellow Robin

On a recent walk through Dr Ken Leversha Reserve we saw 31 species, and I’d seen two others the previous day. Even though the area was decimated by fire earlier this year there were signs of hope as tiny orchids pushed through the soil, bright green ferns carpeted the ground and the epicormic growth was prolific.

But to walk in bushland where it used to be impossible to see tree trunks due to the dense mid and lower storey plants it was devastating to look out across a landscape of blackened tree trunks as far as the eye could see. The only part of the area that wasn’t burned is the 30 acre buffer zone that Boral wants to destroy in order to continue using a quarry that was supposed to have shut down decades ago. Please help by searching for STOP Montrose Quarry Expansion. It would be great to meet you at the quarry gates on Fussell Road at 1pm on Saturday 20 December.

The two other species I saw at the site were a Rufous Fantail and a pair of Powerful Owls. There are many reasons to close this quarry, health (crystalline silica/silicosis), blasting, traffic, noise and so many protected species of flora and fauna.

I have to sign off now, I’d hoped to write more about the issue but my dog needs me, I’m worried about her.

Happy birding, Kim
