Eastern Spinebill and calendar update

These exquisite little spinebills are one of my favourite species; they come right up to my study window to feed from the correas before heading to the birdbaths.

Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris)
1/1600, f/6.3, ISO 1600

It’s hard to comprehend just how tiny Eastern Spinebills are when looking at a photograph like this. They are about 15cm and 11g, with a significant part of their length being their long, decurved bill.

They often hover while feeding and are the closest species we have to hummingbirds. Their rufous, white, brown, black and grey markings are gorgeous. Their red irises are incredibly bright.

2026 lirralirra calendar – print ready version

My heartfelt thanks for all the orders that flooded my inbox last weekend. The printing proof is scheduled to be ready by the end of August which means the calendars should be printed by the end of September and mailed during October.

To streamline the process my friend Joy has created an Etsy account for us to share. Please click this link: Etsy – Kim Wormald lirralirra or put those words in your search engine. Etsy was founded 20 years ago and is a well-established on-line marketplace. Please let me know if you have any trouble navigating the site and I will help you, or make alternative arrangements for you to receive your calendar/s.

The detail in each photograph is exquisite and will be showcased in an A4 format, opening to A3, saddle-stitched (which is better for the environment than spiral bindings), with the image on the top A4 section and calendar dates on the lower A4 section. Profits from this calendar will be used to continue my conservation photography. Please see last week’s post if you’d like to read some reviews about my previous calendar.

Thank you for your support, happy birding, Kim

A firm favourite in my garden, along with a batch of blue wrens and finches, always feeding between the grevilleas, kangaroo paws and cleaning up the gum leaves. Beautiful image, captures their cheekishness.

  • How I love your images.
Sadly I will have to use alternative arrangements to pay for my calendars. I am locked out of my ETSY account and cannot get them to reopen it.

I think I’ll be organising it the old way for quite a few people EC, which I’m more than happy to do. Though, just in case anyone is wondering, they don’t need an Etsy account to order a calendar.

How beautiful, I love eastern spinebills! I definitely think it would sound better if they were called Australian Golden Hummingbirds. Or Hummingishbirds…

Fantastic work re the calendar! Looking forward to seeing them.
