Satin Bowerbird

It has been a crazily busy week filled with appointments, meetings, picking up sticks, sawing branches, watering plants, cleaning birdbaths, playing with children, catching up with precious friends and seeing a lifer! Sadly my photograph of said lifer looks more like a squashed marshmallow that’s been rolled in the dust but hopefully one day I’ll get a shot that’s lovely enough to share. In the meantime I’ll share this absolutely stunning Satin Bowerbird.

Satin Bowerbird (Ptilonorhynchus violaceus)

These birds are mesmerisingly beautiful. I am so thrilled that a small family group has started living at my place and making good use of the birdbaths. Everything about this species seems unique, their incredible irises, gorgeous underparts, sturdy bills and their fabulous songs. I hope the male finds a good spot to create a bower and starts collecting all kinds of blue objects for decoration.

With tomorrow’s temperature expected to reach 40 degrees please fill your birdbaths, trays, pot plant saucers (anything handy and not too deep) with water. Refresh it during the day if you can. This juvenile Red Wattlebird visited my birdbaths last week when the temperature was over 40. Birds struggle to survive in such heat and water placed around your garden will be much appreciated. Please see last week’s post if you’d like more information on how to keep birds safe in a heatwave.

And please everyone, keep cool and keep safe.

Happy birding, Kim
