I have never seen a Laughing Kookaburra stretch its wings in this way while preening.

At first I was concerned that it had an injured wing but then it started stretching both sides, and it flew and foraged without any obvious issue. It reminded me of how we might have a good stretch after too long sitting at the computer.
This is an adult kooka as its lower bill has turned from black to bone coloured. The lighter colour on the upper part of its bill is mud from digging into the dirt to capture large invertebrates.

And here it is stretching its left wing. It did this so many times, it was fascinating to watch. I like the way its tail is peeking through its primary wing feathers.

There have been more calendar orders than I expected so I need to organise a second printing. If you’d like a copy of these beautifully printed birds for 2026 please order via the Etsy link: 2026 Lirralirra Calendar
I’ve been told they make beaut Christmas and Kris Kringle gifts for family, friends, colleagues and teachers. I appreciate your support of my conservation photography.
Happy birding, Kim

So interesting, and beautiful pics. And I can’t vouch for how stunning the calendars are too!
Thanks heaps Alyssa!
