The dibber-dobber bird

Lurking under my camo-hide I’m pretty much invisible, I’ve had birds land on my lens and even on my head, but I couldn’t hide from the dibber-dobber bird.

My hide is a light-weight camouflage fabric that I drape over myself and my camera – it gets too hot in summer but on cool days it’s awkward but not unpleasant. I was using it today hoping to see some honeyeaters when I heard the scolding call of this White-browed Scrubwren telling me off and making sure the other birds knew something strange was nearby.

It moved around me, continuously churring. No other bird has behaved like this, some are oblivious, others are spooked but only this 12g, 12cm tiny little specimen behaved with so much awareness and courage.

I hadn’t turned up in its space but had been sitting on a wall for quite a while when the chastising began; it reminded me of childhood, being soundly told off by a vice principal who thought the more words they used the more effective the scolding would be. The scrubwren was comical as it looked around as though trying to work out exactly what I was, the vice principal was pretty comical too come to think of it.

I admire this little whistle-blower alerting its ‘friends’ to my presence. I’ve been thinking a lot about friendship this week, I have spectacularly awesome friends, I hope you have too.

Happy birding, Kim
