Helmeted Honeyeater

I’ve had some lovely feedback on the lirralirra 2014 Calendar, it’s been awesome to read such kind emails and I hope the calendars give pleasure throughout 2014. As 100% of the profits are going to the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater I thought today’s post should show one of these beautiful birds.

This exquisite honeyeater is one of a small number of these birds surviving in the wild. Helmeted Honeyeaters are Critically Endangered and Zoos Victoria are helping to boost their numbers with a captive breeding program at Healesville Sanctuary. During October twelve captive bred honeyeaters were carefully released into the wild. A friend and I are part of the volunteer group that braves the mossies and leeches to provide supplementary feeding to help these birds establish themselves in the wild; the local spiders aren’t so thrilled about their arrival.

I hope your 2014 is full of birdsong and happiness, Kim
