Yellow Robin

Last week I was out of action while languishing in hospital but strangely it was also a week when a small flurry of photographic positives came my way.

First Place Prints – Victorian Association of Photographic Societies – June 2016

Each year the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies (VAPS) holds a convention that is well attended and includes presentations and an awards dinner – I believe similar associations are available in other states and territories. It was an honour that my image was chosen as one of several images representing Knox Photographic Society, and a greater honour when it won a VAPS award.

I joined Knox Photographic Society (KPS) thanks to my eldest daughter ripping an article from the local newspaper, I’m so glad she did. Over the past three years KPS have offered awesome friendship, education and encouragement. If you have been considering joining a club I’d recommend visiting one, if you happen to live in or around Knox and decide to try KPS please come and say ‘hi’.

When I got home from hospital I didn’t go inside straight away, instead I walked into the garden and down to the bushland. I savoured the cool breeze and the soft rain, and a small flock of Brown Thornbills and Striated Thornbills flew over my head and around me – it was magical. And in the morning, just as I woke, I heard an Eastern Yellow Robin calling and wondered if it was the sweet bird in the image above.

Happy birding and good health to you all

Kim

PS
– My apologies for the ridiculously large copyright symbol, I’m too tired to fix it
– Thank you for the kind words in last week’s comments, they are very much appreciated
– The other specks of good news were receiving a medal from Switzerland and again being listed in the PSA Who’s Who of Nature Photographers

Well done, Kim. It’s a beautiful photo and well worthy of this recognition. Glad to hear you are out of hospital and out and about again. Since my recovery from my hospital visit, I now have my computer as a hospital patient. It has been in Melbourne for a fix, to no avail although $100s spent on it, and now I have to use Denise’s computer to access the Net, hence my tardy responses. Keep on taking your beautiful photos – they are very much appreciated by those of us who know how difficult it is to get shots like yours of our feathered friends in their natural environs.

Thank you Neil, I really appreciate your kind comments. Hopefully I’ll get out and about with the camera next week, I’m missing it a lot. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time deleting images which has been fun. How frustrating about your computer, I hope it’s properly fixed soon.

I’m glad you’re on the mend and congratulations on the awards.

  • Wonderful (and deserved) recognition of your work. I say work but I know it is also play and obsession.
Hospitals can be good places for bird watching. When my partner was on one of his many incarcerations in the local one I took my camera each trip. Short-beaked corellas, cockatoos, red-rumped parrots, eastern rosellas, crimson rosellas, wattle birds…
It brightened both our our days.

Isn’t it awesome when work, play and obsession are synonymous. That’s great that you see so many birds on trips to hospital. I couldn’t even see the window except for the times when the bed next to me was vacant or when I went walkabout – it made being home again even more precious.

  • Congratulations for the well deserved awards. The birds were just giving you a Welcome Home greeting.

Thank you David. The ‘Welcome Home’ greeting was awesome, and ridiculously emotional – I love being outside, even in the rain.

    Hello Kim,
Congratulations on your First Place-Prints VAPS award. The Yellow Robin sits so nicely in the photo.
A medal from Switzerland sounds interesting and Congratulations again for being listed in the PSA Who’s Who of Nature Photographers.
Your hard work in the field of photography is being appreciated far and wide.
Best Wishes….don’t stay up too late.
    Carole. 🙂

Thank you so much Carole. It was the perfect time to get some pleasant news but with these competitions there are times when I don’t even get an acceptance in a section, even with images that have done well elsewhere. I love that photography is so subjective. I haven’t been able to stay up late since coming home from hospital, it’s very strange! I hope we get to catch up soon 🙂

This sounds great”The other specks of good news were receiving a medal from Switzerland and again being listed in the PSA Who’s Who of Nature Photographers” please when time and heath permits explain more. 🙂

Hi Gary, I enter international photography competitions which are accredited by major international agencies like FIAP and PSA; it’s part of the process for getting photographic honours (which reminds me I need to update my sidebar bio!). The Swiss competition liked my image of a Wedge-tailed Eagle in flight and the PSA (Photographic Association of America) run a Who’s Who in Photography based on acceptances and awards. Do you enter any nationals or internationals? I wrote a post about them a while ago, they can be a bit unpredictable but it’s an interesting way to see beaut images and strive to improve.
